मृत राजा के शरीर को देखकर कौशल्या के नेत्रों में आँसू भर आए, जो बुझी हुई अग्नि, जलरहित समुद्र और कान्तिहीन सूर्य के समान शोभाहीन लग रहा था। अनेक प्रकार से शोक से व्याकुल होकर उन्होंने राजा का सिर गोद में ले लिया और कैकेयी से इस प्रकार बोलीं -॥1-2॥
Kausalya's eyes filled with tears on seeing the body of the deceased king which looked as graceless as an extinguished fire, a waterless ocean and a sun without its radiance. Grief-stricken in many ways, she took the king's head in her lap and spoke to Kaikeyi thus -॥1-2॥
