अव्याहृतं व्याहृताच्छ्रेय आहु:
सत्यं वदेद् व्याहृतं तद् द्वितीयम्।
प्रियं वदेद् व्याहृतं तत् तृतीयं
धर्मं वदेद् व्याहृतं तच्चतुर्थम्॥ १२॥ |

| अनुवाद |
| कहा गया है कि बोलने से न बोलना श्रेष्ठ है, (यह वाणी का प्रथम लक्षण है और यदि बोलना ही पड़े तो) सत्य बोलना वाणी का दूसरा लक्षण है अर्थात् मौन से अधिक कल्याणकारी है। सत्य और मधुर बोलना वाणी का तीसरा लक्षण है। यदि सत्य और मधुर होने के साथ-साथ धर्म के अनुकूल भी कहा जाए, तो वह वाणी का चौथा लक्षण है। (ये क्रमशः श्रेष्ठ हैं)॥12॥ |

| It is said that not speaking is better than speaking, (this is the first characteristic of speech and if one has to speak then) speaking the truth is the second characteristic of speech i.e. it is more beneficial than silence. Speaking the truth and pleasant is the third characteristic of speech.
