इस प्रकार भिन्न-भिन्न वर्णों के अपने-अपने लक्षण हैं (जैसे ब्राह्मण के लिए अध्ययन-अध्यापन आदि, क्षत्रिय के लिए शौर्य आदि और वैश्य के लिए कृषि आदि), उसी प्रकार प्रत्येक वर्ण के लिए वही धर्म का स्वरूप है और दूसरे वर्ण के लिए वही अधर्म का स्वरूप है। इस प्रकार यद्यपि धर्म और अधर्म सदैव निश्चित रहते हैं, तथापि संकट के समय वे दूसरे वर्ण के लक्षणों को भी अपना लेते हैं। प्रथम वर्ण ब्राह्मण का विशेष लक्षण (यज्ञ और अध्यापन आदि) ही इसका प्रमाण है (क्षत्रिय आदि को संकट के समय भी यज्ञ और अध्यापन आदि का सहारा नहीं लेना चाहिए)। संजय! अधर्म का स्वरूप क्या है, उसे तुम (शास्त्रों के वचनों से) जानो।
