इसके बाद पांडवों ने एक मृत व्यक्ति का शव लाकर उस वृक्ष की शाखा से बांध दिया। बांधने का उद्देश्य यह था कि दुर्गंध नाक में पड़ते ही लोग समझ जाएं कि इसमें कोई सड़ा हुआ शव बंधा है; इसलिए वे दूर से ही इस शमी वृक्ष से दूर रहें। परंतु पांडव इस प्रकार शव को शमी वृक्ष से बांधकर वन में ग्वालों और भेड़पालकों को शव बांधने का कारण बताते हुए इस प्रकार कहते - 'यह हमारी एक सौ अस्सी वर्ष की माता है। यह हमारे कुल का कर्तव्य है, इसलिए हमने ऐसा किया है। हमारे पूर्वज भी यही करते आए हैं।'* इस प्रकार शत्रुओं का वध करके वे कुंतीपुत्र नगर के निकट आ गए।
After this the Pandavas brought a corpse of a dead person and tied it to the branch of that tree. The purpose of tying it was that as soon as the foul smell reached their noses, people would understand that a rotten corpse was tied to it; therefore, they would avoid this Shami tree from a distance. But the Pandavas, having tied the corpse to the Shami tree in this way, would explain the reason for tying the corpse to the cowherds and sheep herders in the forest, saying thus - 'She is our mother who is one hundred and eighty years old. This is the duty of our clan, therefore we have done this. Our forefathers have also been doing the same.'* Thus those sons of Kunti, having slain the enemies, came near the city. 31-34.
