'दुःख का मूल कारण आसक्ति है। आसक्ति भय का कारण है। शोक, हर्ष और क्लेश - ये सब आसक्ति के कारण ही प्राप्त होते हैं। आसक्ति के कारण ही विषयों में भावना और ममता होती है। ये दोनों ही अशुभ हैं। इनमें भी प्रथम अर्थात् विषयों के प्रति भावना ही महान अनर्थ का कारण मानी गई है । 28-29॥
'The root cause of sorrow is attachment. Attachment causes fear. Grief, joy and tribulation – all these are achieved only because of attachment. It is through attachment that objects have feelings and affection. Both of these are inauspicious. Among these also, the first i.e. feeling towards objects is considered to be the cause of great disaster. 28-29॥
