'भारत! हम विजयी हों या मारे जाएँ, हम सभी परिस्थितियों में श्रेष्ठता प्राप्त कर सकते हैं। यदि इस राक्षस के जीवित रहते सूर्य अस्त हो जाए, तो मैं अपने को फिर कभी क्षत्रिय नहीं कहूँगा। हे रात्रि-राक्षस! स्थिर रहो, मैं पाण्डुपुत्र सहदेव हूँ। या तो तुम मुझे मारकर द्रौपदी को ले जाओ, या मुझसे मारे जाओ और आज ही यहीं सदा के लिए सो जाओ।' जब मद्रिनपुत्र सहदेव ऐसा कह ही रहे थे, तभी अचानक भीमसेन हाथ में गदा लिए प्रकट हुए, मानो वज्रधारी इन्द्र वहाँ आ गए हों। उन्होंने अपने दोनों भाइयों और गौरवशाली द्रौपदी को वहाँ (राक्षस के हाथों में) देखा।
