युधिष्ठिर उवाच
अभ्युत्थिते दस्युबले क्षत्रार्थे वर्णसंकरे।
सम्प्रमूढेषु वर्णेषु यद्यन्योऽभिभवेद् बली॥ ३५॥
ब्राह्मणो यदि वा वैश्य: शूद्रो वा राजसत्तम।
दस्युभ्योऽथ प्रजा रक्षेद् दण्डं धर्मेण धारयन्॥ ३६॥
कार्यं कुर्यान्न वा कुर्यात् संवार्यो वा भवेन्न वा।
तस्माच्छस्त्रं ग्रहीतव्यमन्यत्र क्षत्रबन्धुत:॥ ३७॥
अनुवाद
युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा, "पितामह! हे महाराज! यदि लुटेरों का गिरोह दिन-प्रतिदिन बढ़ता जा रहा है, समाज में अंतर्जातीय मेलजोल फैल रहा है और सभी जातियों के लोग क्षत्रिय प्रजा की रक्षा का कोई उपाय नहीं खोज पा रहे हैं, तो उस स्थिति में यदि कोई बलवान ब्राह्मण, वैश्य या शूद्र धर्म की रक्षा के लिए डंडा उठाकर प्रजा को लुटेरों के हाथों से बचा ले, तो क्या वह राज्य चलाने का कार्य कर सकता है या नहीं? अथवा उसे ऐसा करने से रोका जाना चाहिए या नहीं? मेरा मत है कि क्षत्रियों के अतिरिक्त अन्य जातियों के लोगों को भी ऐसे अवसरों पर शस्त्र अवश्य उठाना चाहिए।"
Yudhishthira asked, "Grandfather! O great king! If the gang of robbers is increasing day by day, inter-caste mixing is spreading in the society and people of all castes are unable to find any way to protect the subjects of the Kshatriya, then in that situation if a strong Brahmin, Vaishya or Shudra takes up a staff to protect the religion and saves the subjects from the hands of the robbers, can he do the work of ruling the kingdom or not? Or should he be stopped from doing this or not? My opinion is that people of other castes than Kshatriyas should also definitely take up arms on such occasions.
