जनमेजय बोले - "हे प्रभु! महर्षि व्यास ने अपने शिष्यों सहित मधुसूदन की जिन-जिन नामों से स्तुति की थी, उन-उन नामों की व्युत्पत्ति मुझे बताने की कृपा करें। मैं प्रजापतियों के पति भगवान श्रीहरि के नामों की व्याख्या सुनना चाहता हूँ; क्योंकि उन्हें सुनकर मैं शरणचन्द्र के समान पवित्र हो जाऊँगा। ॥1-2॥
Janamejaya said, "O Lord! Kindly tell me the derivation of the various names by which Maharishi Vyasa along with his disciples had praised Madhusudan. I want to hear the explanation of the names of Lord Shri Hari, the husband of the Prajapatis; because after listening to them I will become as pure and holy as Sharanchandra. ॥1-2॥
