अव्याहृतं व्याहृताच्छ्रेय आहु:
सत्यं वदेद् व्याहृतं तद् द्वितीयम्।
धर्मं वदेद् व्याहृतं तत् तृतीयं
प्रियं वदेद् व्याहृतं तच्चतुर्थम्॥ ३८॥ |

| कहा गया है कि व्यर्थ बोलने की अपेक्षा मौन रहना श्रेष्ठ है (यह वाणी का प्रथम लक्षण है)। सत्य बोलना वाणी का दूसरा लक्षण है; प्रिय बातें बोलना वाणी का तीसरा लक्षण है। धर्मानुसार बोलना वाणी का चौथा लक्षण है (ये क्रमशः श्रेष्ठ हैं)।॥38॥ |
