प्रथम श्रेणी के अनुसार जीविका चलाने वाले ब्राह्मण को यज्ञ, अध्ययन-अध्यापन, दान और ग्रहण - ये छह कर्म करने चाहिए। द्वितीय श्रेणी के ब्राह्मण को अध्ययन, पूजन और दान - ये तीन ही कर्म करने चाहिए। तृतीय श्रेणी के ब्राह्मण को अध्ययन और दान - ये दो ही कर्म करने चाहिए तथा चतुर्थ श्रेणी के ब्राह्मण को केवल ब्रह्म यज्ञ (वेदों का अध्ययन) करना चाहिए।॥4॥
A Brahmin who earns his livelihood according to the first category should perform these six deeds - Yajna-Yajna, study-teaching, charity and acceptance. A Brahmin belonging to the second category should engage in only these three deeds - study, worship and charity. A Brahmin belonging to the third category should perform only these two deeds - study and charity and a Brahmin belonging to the fourth category should perform only Brahma Yajna (study of Vedas).॥ 4॥
