इसके बाद विचित्र अर्थों से परिपूर्ण भीष्म पर्व की विषय-सूची कही गई है, जिसमें संजय ने जम्बूद्वीप की रचना से संबंधित कथा कही है। इस पर्व में दस दिन तक चलने वाले अत्यंत भयंकर युद्ध का वर्णन है, जिसमें धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर की सेना के अत्यंत दुखी होने की कथा है। इस युद्ध के प्रारंभ में तेजस्वी भगवान वासुदेव ने मोक्ष के ज्ञान देने वाली युक्तियों (जो भगवद्गीता के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है) के द्वारा अर्जुन के मोहजनित शोक और शोक का नाश किया था। इस पर्व में यह भी कथा है कि युधिष्ठिर के हित में लगे हुए निर्भय, उदारचित्त, विनम्र और भक्तिभाव से युक्त भगवान श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन की शिथिलता देखकर हाथ में चाबुक लेकर तुरंत ही रथ से कूद पड़े और भीष्म को मारने के लिए बड़े वेग से दौड़े॥244—248॥
