वहाँ एकत्रित हुए नीच स्वभाव के राजा आपस में यह कहते हुए उनका उपहास करने लगे- 'भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म बड़े धर्मात्मा पुरुष माने जाते थे। वे वृद्ध हो गए हैं, उनका शरीर झुर्रियों से भर गया है, उनके बाल सफेद हो गए हैं; फिर वे यहाँ क्यों आए हैं? वे बड़े निर्लज्ज जान पड़ते हैं। अपनी प्रतिज्ञा को झूठा कहकर वे प्रजा से क्या कहेंगे- अपना मुख कैसे दिखाएँगे? संसार में व्यर्थ ही यह बात फैला दी गई है कि भीष्मजी ब्रह्मचारी हैं।'॥8-9 1/2॥
The kings of mean nature who were gathered there, started making fun of him, saying among themselves these things- 'Bheeshma, the best among the Bharata dynasty, was known to be a very pious man. He has grown old, his body is covered with wrinkles, his hair has turned white; then what is the reason that he has come here? He seems to be very shameless. What will he say to the people after making his promise false- how will he show his face? It has been unnecessarily spread in the world that Bhishmaji is a celibate.'॥ 8-9 1/2॥
